Stubborn Streak

“Are you sure you want to wear that?” Ben’s voice was too even, which meant he was already annoyed. I glanced at my reflection in the hallway mirror, adjusting the hem of my denim shorts. They were short, yes, but not scandalous. Not for a Friday night at our local dive bar, anyway. My cropped top showed a sliver of midriff. Perfectly acceptable. To me, at least.

“What’s wrong with it?” I asked, turning to face him, a smile playing on my lips. He was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, one eyebrow slightly raised. He looked good in his plain black t-shirt, the kind that hugged his shoulders just right. Always so effortlessly put together, even when he was pissed.

“It’s… a lot of leg,” he said, pushing off the frame and walking towards me. He stopped close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off him. “And a lot of stomach.”

I traced the line of his jaw with my finger. “Is that a problem, Ben?” My voice dropped, a little provocative. I knew exactly what I was doing. I loved seeing that muscle clench in his jaw, loved knowing I could get under his skin so easily.

He caught my hand, his grip firm but not painful. “Just think about the kind of attention you’ll get.”

“Good attention, I hope,” I countered, pulling my hand free and spinning away. “Come on, don’t be such a fuddy-duddy. It’s Friday. We’re going out.” I grabbed my small crossbody bag from the hook by the door. “Unless you want to stay home?” I asked, turning back, my eyes wide and innocent. “We could always just… stay in.” The suggestion hung in the air, loaded with possibility, but I knew he wouldn't take it. Not tonight. Not when he’d been looking forward to catching up with his friends.

He sighed, a long-suffering sound that made me grin inwardly. “No, we’re going out. Just… don’t complain to me when guys are staring.”

“Oh, I won’t,” I promised, already halfway out the door. “I’ll just enjoy it.” I heard him mutter something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like “trouble,” but I just laughed. It was true, after all. I was trouble. And he wouldn’t have me any other way.

The bar was already buzzing when we arrived. The air was thick with the smell of stale beer and cheap cologne, and the music was just loud enough to make conversation a little difficult, which suited me fine. I liked the energy of it, the feeling of being surrounded by people, even if I barely knew any of them.

Ben navigated us through the crowd, his hand resting lightly on the small of my back. A possessive gesture, subtle but clear. I liked that too. It was his way of staking his claim without making a scene. But I was also me, and ‘subtle’ wasn’t always my strong suit.

We found his friends at their usual corner booth. Liam, with his easy smile, and Sarah, always impeccably dressed even for a bar night. I exchanged hugs and air kisses, then slid into the booth beside Ben. Almost immediately, a guy from the next table, all biceps and a too-tight t-shirt, caught my eye and held it a fraction too long. I met his stare, a small, challenging smile on my face, before turning back to the conversation, knowing Ben had seen it. I could feel his body stiffen beside me, a barely perceptible shift.

“So, Maya, still kicking ass at work?” Liam asked, always good at redirecting attention. He was a sweet guy, if a little oblivious sometimes.

“Trying to,” I said, taking a sip of the beer Ben had already ordered for me. “The new project manager is a nightmare. Thinks he knows everything.”

“Sounds familiar,” Sarah chimed in, rolling her eyes. “My boss is convinced we can hit Q4 targets with half the staff. Delusional.”

The conversation flowed, easy and familiar. Ben joined in, talking about some ridiculous client request he’d gotten. I listened, interjecting occasionally, but mostly I was aware of the atmosphere, the people around us. My eyes drifted. A group of guys at the bar, laughing too loudly. A woman dancing alone, lost in the music. And then, the guy from before, still watching. I felt a little thrill, a mischievous spark ignite within me.

I leaned into Ben, my arm brushing against his. “I’m going to grab another drink,” I murmured, loud enough for only him to hear. “Want anything?”

He shook his head. “I’m good. Be quick, it’s getting crowded.” His tone was a little gruff. He knew. He always knew.

I slid out of the booth, making sure my movements were fluid, deliberate. I walked towards the bar, letting my hips sway just a little more than necessary. I caught the eye of the guy again, this time holding his stare for a beat longer, a quiet acknowledgment. He offered a slow smile, and I felt a flicker of triumph. Not because I was interested, but because I could. Because I could still command attention, even with Ben just a few feet away.

“What can I get you?” the bartender asked, wiping down the counter.

“A gin and tonic, please,” I said, my voice clear over the music. I glanced back towards our table. Ben was watching me, his expression unreadable. He had his beer bottle in one hand, twisting it slowly. My heart gave a little skip. He was annoyed. Good.

As I waited for my drink, I felt a presence beside me. “Hey there,” a voice said, a little too close to my ear. It was the biceps guy. “Fancy seeing you here.”

I turned, feigning surprise. “Oh, hey. Didn’t see you there.” A lie, of course. I’d been acutely aware of him since we walked in.

“I’m Mark,” he said, extending a hand. His grip was firm, a little sweaty. “And you are?”

“Maya,” I replied, pulling my hand back a little too quickly. “Nice to meet you, Mark.” I deliberately kept my tone neutral, polite but not inviting. I knew what I was doing. I knew what Ben was seeing.

“Mind if I buy you a drink, Maya?” he asked, his eyes lingering on my mouth.

“That’s sweet, but I’ve already got one coming,” I said, gesturing to the bartender who was now placing my drink in front of me. “And my boyfriend’s waiting for me.” I made sure to emphasize the word ‘boyfriend’, even though I knew it was probably too late.

Mark’s face fell slightly, but he recovered quickly. “Ah, too bad. He’s a lucky man.” He gave me a knowing look, then backed away, dissolving back into the crowd. Mission accomplished.

I picked up my drink, a triumphant smirk on my face, and started back towards the booth. Ben’s eyes met mine the moment I turned. There was a challenge in his gaze, a simmering anger that made my stomach clench in a way that was both thrilling and a little terrifying. I kept my chin up, walking confidently, even as I felt a tremor of anticipation.

I slid back into the booth. “Everything okay?” Sarah asked, oblivious. “You were gone a while.”

“Just crowded at the bar,” I said, taking a long sip of my gin and tonic. I avoided Ben’s eyes, focusing instead on Liam’s story about a disastrous online date. But I could feel Ben’s attention on me, heavy and unwavering. It was almost a physical presence.

The rest of the evening passed in a blur of forced laughter and polite conversation. I could feel the tension radiating off Ben, a low hum beneath the surface. He barely spoke to me, his answers curt when I tried to engage him. He was mad. Really mad. And I was loving every minute of it, even as a small part of me wondered if I’d pushed him too far this time.

When it was finally time to leave, Ben didn’t wait for me to say goodbye to his friends. He just stood up, a quiet command for me to follow. I hugged Sarah quickly, gave Liam a wave, and then hurried after Ben, a nervous excitement fluttering in my chest.

The walk home was silent. The streets were quiet, the air cool. I tried to make conversation once, something about the band that had been playing at the bar, but Ben just grunted in response. His jaw was tight, his hands shoved into his pockets. I kept a few paces behind him, watching his broad back, feeling a mixture of apprehension and an undeniable thrill. He was going to explode, and I was ready for it.

We got back to the apartment, and he didn’t even bother to turn on the lights. The only illumination came from the streetlights filtering through the blinds, casting long shadows across the living room. He walked straight to the couch, dropped onto it, and just sat there, staring straight ahead.

I closed the door softly behind me. The click echoed in the sudden silence. “Ben?” I asked, my voice a little softer than I intended. “Are you okay?”

He turned his head slowly, his eyes dark in the dim light. “Okay? Maya, are you serious right now?” His voice was low, controlled, but there was an edge to it that made my skin prickle.

I walked towards him, stopping a few feet away. “What did I do?” I asked, feigning innocence, even though I knew damn well what I’d done.

He stood up, slowly, deliberately. He was taller than me, and in the low light, he seemed to loom. “What did you do?” He took a step closer. “You flirted with every guy in that bar, that’s what you did. You practically invited that Mark guy to buy you a drink, knowing I was right there.”

My heart pounded. This was it. The moment I’d been waiting for. “I didn’t flirt,” I said, my voice rising slightly. “I was just being friendly. And I told him I had a boyfriend.”

“Oh, you told him you had a boyfriend *after* you let him hit on you for five minutes,” Ben countered, his voice getting louder now, a rumble that vibrated through the floor. He was right in front of me now, his chest almost touching mine. “And you think I didn’t see you smiling at him? The way you walked to the bar? The way you kept looking at him?”

“I was just having fun,” I whispered, looking up at him, my defiance still simmering, but a thread of genuine fear starting to weave its way through it. He looked so… intense. So powerful. I had pushed him, and he was finally pushing back.

“Fun?” he scoffed, his hands coming up to grip my shoulders. His fingers dug in, not painfully, but with a warning. “You think that’s fun, Maya? Making me look like an idiot in front of my friends? Making me wonder if you even want to be with me?”

“That’s not fair,” I said, trying to twist away, but his grip was unyielding. “Of course I want to be with you.”

“Then why do you do it?” he demanded, his face close to mine. I could see the anger in his eyes, but beneath it, something else. Frustration. Hurt. And a raw, undeniable desire.

I looked away, my breath catching in my throat. I couldn’t answer. Not truthfully. How could I tell him I did it because I loved the chase? Because I loved seeing him get possessive, get jealous? Because it made me feel wanted, made me feel alive? Because it confirmed that he truly cared, that he wasn’t taking me for granted.

He tilted my chin up, forcing me to meet his gaze. “Look at me, Maya.” His voice was rough now, strained. “Why do you push me like this? Why do you constantly test my patience?”

“I don’t know,” I breathed, the lie tasting bitter on my tongue. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down my cheek. I hated crying, but sometimes, when I was truly cornered, it just happened.

He watched the tear, his expression softening slightly, but the intensity in his eyes remained. “Don’t you dare cry, Maya. Not when you know exactly what you’re doing.” He let go of my shoulders, only to slide his hands around my waist, pulling me flush against him. I could feel the hard line of his body, the heat radiating from him.

“You like to play games, don’t you?” he murmured, his voice dropping to a low growl that sent shivers down my spine. He was no longer asking. He was stating a fact. “You like to see how far you can push me.”

I nodded, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement against his chest. I couldn’t deny it. Not anymore. Not when he was looking at me like this, seeing right through me.

“And what happens, Maya, when I decide I’ve had enough of your games?” His fingers splayed across my lower back, pressing me even closer. I could feel the hard ridge of his erection against my stomach, a sudden, potent reminder of where this was heading.

“What happens?” I whispered, my voice almost too quiet to hear. My heart was pounding, a frantic drum against my ribs. My earlier defiance had melted away, replaced by a sharp, overwhelming surrender.

He leaned down, his mouth brushing against my ear. “Then I stop playing by your rules.” His breath was warm, a tantalizing promise. “I make you play by mine.”

He didn’t wait for a response. His lips found mine, urgent and demanding. It wasn’t a soft, tender kiss. It was possessive, almost angry, a raw expression of all the frustration and desire he’d been holding back. My hands instinctively went to his hair, clutching at the thick strands, pulling him closer. I kissed him back with equal fervor, a quiet apology and an eager invitation all at once. My body hummed with a desperate need.

He broke the kiss, his eyes still dark, still intense. “You think you can just walk around, showing off, getting every guy’s attention?” he breathed, his thumb tracing the curve of my hip. “And then come home and expect me to just… be okay with it?”

“No,” I admitted, my voice hoarse. “I… I wanted you to notice. I wanted you to care.” The words tumbled out, a confession I hadn’t known I was ready to make.

A flicker of something, perhaps understanding, perhaps relief, crossed his face. “Oh, I noticed, Maya. Believe me, I noticed.” His hand slid down, cupping my ass, pulling me even higher against his hardness. “And I care. Too much, apparently.”

He lifted me without effort, my legs instinctively wrapping around his waist. I gasped, clinging to him as he carried me towards the bedroom. The darkness was a shroud, making everything feel more illicit, more secret. He didn’t stop to turn on any lights, just carried me straight to the bed and lowered me onto it, never breaking eye contact.

He hovered over me, his hands on either side of my head, trapping me. “You like being watched, don’t you?” he asked, his voice low, a challenge. “You like the attention.”

I swallowed, my throat suddenly dry. “Sometimes,” I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. I could feel the pull of his body, the heat of him, pressing into me through our clothes.

“Well, tonight,” he said, leaning down to nip at my lower lip, a playful bite that sent a jolt through me, “tonight, you’re only getting my attention.” His lips moved to my neck, trailing fire across my skin. “Only mine.”

He stripped off his shirt first, the fabric rustling as it hit the floor. The dim light glinted off the hard planes of his chest, the defined muscles of his arms. He was a force, an undeniable presence. Then he tackled my top, pulling it up and over my head, tossing it aside without ceremony. My bra followed, unhooked with a practiced ease that made me shiver. He stared at my breasts, his eyes lingering, before lowering his head and taking one nipple into his mouth. A gasp escaped me, a raw, involuntary sound.

His tongue flicked, teasing, suckling, sending waves of pleasure through me. My hands tangled in his hair, holding him closer, arching into the sensation. He moved to the other breast, giving it the same devoted attention, and I felt my core clench, a deep, aching need building inside me.

“So good, Maya,” he murmured against my skin, his voice thick with desire. “Always so good.”

He worked his way down, his lips trailing a path of fire over my stomach, lingering at the waistband of my shorts. He paused there, his fingers hooking into the denim, pulling the fabric taut. “These shorts,” he said, his voice a low growl. “They’re coming off.”

I didn’t resist. I was beyond resistance. I lifted my hips, letting him slide them down my legs, along with my underwear. The cool air on my bare skin was a sudden shock, quickly replaced by the heat of his gaze. He took a moment, just looking, and I felt a blush creep up my chest, even in the dim light. It was a vulnerable feeling, being exposed like this, but also incredibly arousing.

He shed the rest of his clothes quickly, efficiently, and then he was back, a solid, hard presence between my legs. The skin-on-skin contact was electric, every inch of my body alive and tingling. He didn’t enter me immediately. Instead, he propped himself up on his elbows, looking down at me, his eyes full of a fierce, possessive hunger.

“You know what you do to me, don’t you, Maya?” he asked, his voice rough with emotion. “You drive me absolutely insane.”

I reached up, tracing the line of his jaw, feeling the slight stubble beneath my fingertips. “Is that a bad thing?” I whispered, a hint of my usual playful defiance returning, though softer now, tinged with genuine affection.

He shook his head, a slow, deliberate movement. “No. Not bad.” He leaned down, kissing me deeply, his tongue plundering my mouth, mirroring the invasion to come. “Just… infuriatingly addictive.”

He pulled back slightly, his eyes still locked on mine. He shifted, and I felt the blunt head of his penis press against my entrance, hot and insistent. My breath hitched. I wanted him, desperately. Wanted him to take control, to claim me.

“Are you going to be a good girl tonight, Maya?” he asked, his voice a low command. “Or am I going to have to remind you who you belong to?”

I arched my back, pushing myself against him, a quiet plea. “Good girl,” I gasped, my fingers digging into his shoulders. “I’ll be a good girl.”

A triumphant smile, quick and fleeting, touched his lips. “That’s what I like to hear.” And then he pushed, a slow, deliberate entry that had me crying out, my body arching off the bed. He filled me, stretching me, claiming every inch. It was a feeling of exquisite fullness, of being utterly consumed.

He held still for a moment, letting me adjust, letting my body acclimate to his presence. My legs tightened around his waist, pulling him deeper. “Ben,” I pleaded, my voice thick with passion. “Please.”

He started to move then, a slow, deep rhythm that quickly picked up pace. Each thrust was powerful, deliberate, driving me further into the mattress. My hips bucked against his, meeting his every movement. The sounds in the room were raw, guttural – the creak of the bed, the slick sounds of skin on skin, my gasps and his low groans. It was raw, unfiltered, everything I had been craving.

He leaned down, his mouth finding my neck, sucking a bruise onto the tender skin there. “This is what happens, Maya,” he breathed against my ear, his voice ragged. “This is what happens when you push me.”

I cried out as he hit a particularly sensitive spot, my entire body convulsing around him. “Don’t stop,” I begged, clutching at his back, my nails digging into his skin. “Please, don’t stop.”

He moved faster, harder, a relentless rhythm that pushed me closer and closer to the edge. My vision blurred, my mind emptying of everything but the sensation of him inside me, driving into me. I was a tangle of limbs, sweat, and raw desire, completely at his mercy. And I loved it. Every single, demanding, overwhelming second of it.

With one final, powerful thrust, he cried out my name, his body tensing, releasing his seed deep inside me. I followed moments later, my own climax a shattering explosion that left me gasping, trembling, utterly spent. My muscles spasmed around him, milking every last drop of pleasure.

He collapsed onto me, his weight a comforting pressure, his breath hot against my ear. We lay there for a long time, the only sounds our ragged breathing slowly returning to normal. My body was still humming, a sharp aftermath of sensation. I felt utterly satisfied, completely claimed.

He shifted, rolling onto his side but still keeping me close, his arm draped possessively over my waist. He kissed my forehead, a soft, tender gesture that was a stark contrast to the ferocity of minutes earlier. “Trouble,” he murmured, his voice laced with affection, a hint of his earlier frustration. “You are nothing but trouble.”

I snuggled closer, resting my head on his shoulder. “But you love it,” I whispered, a lazy smile spreading across my face. I knew I had pushed him, had tested his limits. And he had responded exactly as I’d wanted, taking charge, reminding me of the undeniable power he held over me. It was a dangerous game, but one I was always willing to play. Because the payoff, every single time, was worth it.

He tightened his arm around me. “Yeah,” he sighed, a sound of resignation and contentment. “Yeah, I do.” He kissed the top of my head again. “But next time, Maya,” he added, his voice a little more serious, “next time, maybe just… come home and tell me you want my attention. Without the public display.”

I giggled, a soft, satisfied sound in the dark. “Where’s the fun in that?”

He chuckled, a deep rumble in his chest. “You’re lucky I love you.”

“I know,” I said, closing my eyes, already drifting off to sleep. “And I love you too. Even when you’re being a big, possessive brute.” I felt him squeeze me tighter, a quiet acknowledgment. The game was over for tonight, but I knew, with a thrill of anticipation, it was only a matter of time before the next round began.
