“You think you’re so smart, don’t you?” she said, not bothering to look up from her phone. Her tone was flat, almost bored, but I knew better. That was her prelude. The calm before the storm of whatever nonsense she was about to unleash.
I just grunted, stirring my coffee. It was Saturday morning, and I’d had precisely five minutes of peace since I woke up. I knew this was coming. It always did. Breakfast was her favorite arena for these little skirmishes. Less chance of me walking away, more chance of an audience for her performance.
She finally glanced up, her eyes bright and mischievous, a tiny smirk playing on her lips. “What? No witty retort? Are you losing your touch, old man?”
“I’m 32, Wren. You’re 28. That’s not ‘old man’ territory,” I said, trying to keep my voice even. She loved to needle me about age. Anything, really. Any perceived weakness, any insecurity, any button she could find, she’d press it with a surgeon’s precision.
“Semantics,” she waved a dismissive hand. “You’re acting like one. All quiet and brooding. Did I interrupt your deep thoughts about… tax season?” She giggled, a light, tinkling sound that always made me want to either kiss her senseless or shake her until her teeth rattled.
“I was thinking about how much I want to finish this coffee in peace before I have to deal with whatever fresh hell you’re cooking up today,” I replied, taking a slow, deliberate sip. I watched her over the rim of the mug. Her hair was still a mess from sleep, fanned out around her head like a dark halo. She was wearing one of my old t-shirts, too big, so it hung off one shoulder, revealing the strap of her bra. She looked utterly disheveled and completely beautiful.
“Oh, you wound me!” she said, clutching a hand to her chest dramatically. “Always assuming the worst. I’m just trying to have a pleasant conversation with my… significantly older boyfriend.”
“Wren, stop,” I warned, my voice a little lower now. I could feel the familiar tension building in my chest. It wasn’t anger, not really. More like anticipation. A low thrum that always started when she got like this.
She ignored me, of course. “But since you brought it up, I was actually thinking about something fun. You know, to spice up our weekend.” She leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand, her eyes sparkling. “Remember that little bet we made about the football game last week?”
I did. I’d conveniently forgotten about it, hoping she had too. My team had lost, spectacularly. The stakes had been… interesting.
“I do,” I said cautiously. “What about it?”
“Well,” she drew out the word, making it last a little longer than necessary. “You owe me. And I’ve decided what I want.”
“And what’s that?” I asked, already dreading it. Her punishments were rarely conventional. They usually involved some level of public humiliation for me, or some ridiculous demand that stretched my patience to its limit.
She pushed her phone across the table, screen up. It was a picture of a ridiculous, oversized flamingo floatie. “We’re taking that to the lake today. And you’re inflating it. By yourself. With your mouth.”
I stared at the picture, then at her. Her face was a picture of innocent expectation, but I could see the devil lurking in her eyes. “You’re insane.”
“No, I’m the winner,” she corrected me sweetly. “And a winner gets their prize. So, mouth-to-flamingo action for you, my dear.”
“That thing is like six feet tall,” I protested. “It’ll take me all day.”
“Then you better start early,” she chirped, standing up. She walked over to the counter, her hips swaying deliberately, knowing I was watching. She picked up a banana, peeled it slowly, and took a bite, her gaze still fixed on me. The way she ate it, almost suggestively, was just another layer to her performance. She was always on.
“You’re really going to make me do that?” I asked, my voice tight. I was trying to sound annoyed, but the truth was, a part of me was already turned on. This push and pull, this constant testing, it was exhausting, but it was also thrilling. It was our dance.
“Every single breath,” she confirmed, a wide smile spreading across her face. “And I’ll be supervising. Make sure you don’t slack off.” She paused, chewing thoughtfully. “Oh, and you have to wear that hideous Hawaiian shirt you hate. The one with the pineapples.”
I slammed my mug down on the table, rattling the spoons. “Wren!”
She flinched, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement, but then her smirk returned, even wider. “See? There’s the old man fire. I knew you had it in you.” She finished the banana, tossing the peel into the bin with a flourish. “Get dressed, slowpoke. The flamingo awaits.”
I watched her walk out of the kitchen, her bare feet padding softly on the wood floor. I rubbed a hand over my face. I knew what she was doing. She wasn’t just trying to annoy me; she was trying to get a reaction. She thrived on the friction, the playful antagonism that always simmered between us. And she knew, deep down, that I loved it too. It was our foreplay, our peculiar way of building tension until it snapped.
Two hours later, I was outside, sweat dripping down my forehead, trying to inflate a monstrous pink flamingo. It was even bigger than it looked in the picture. And the Hawaiian shirt was exactly as itchy and offensive as I remembered. Wren was lounging in a deck chair a few feet away, sipping a sparkling water with lemon, occasionally offering unhelpful commentary.
“You’re doing great, sweetie! Only about five thousand more breaths to go,” she’d call out, her voice dripping with mock encouragement. Or, “Is that a sigh of effort or despair? Because I’m pretty sure it’s despair.”
I ignored her, focusing on the task. My cheeks ached, my lungs burned, and I could feel my patience wearing thin. This was exactly what she wanted. She wanted to see me squirm, to push me to the edge. And I was almost there.
“You know,” she said, her voice a little softer now, more thoughtful, “you really do look cute in that shirt. Like a grumpy tourist who accidentally wandered onto a nude beach.”
I stopped blowing, pulling the nozzle out of my mouth. “Are you done yet?” I gasped, my voice hoarse.
She looked at me, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes. “Almost. Just one more thing. When that flamingo is fully inflated, you have to carry it down to the lake. And you can’t use your hands.”
I stared at her. “What?”
“No hands,” she repeated, her smirk back in full force. “You have to carry it with… imagination.” She gestured vaguely at my chest, then my legs. “Figure it out.”
That was it. That was the line. I stood up, slowly, the half-inflated flamingo looming between us like a pink, plastic barrier. “You know what, Wren?” I said, my voice low and steady. “I’m done. I’m done playing your games.”
Her smile faltered a little. “Oh? Are you? Because I think we’re just getting started.”
I took a step towards her, then another. She didn’t move, but her eyes widened slightly. The playful defiance was still there, but a hint of apprehension had crept in. She loved to push, but she also knew when she’d pushed too far. Or, more accurately, she loved to push until I pushed back.
“You think this is funny, don’t you?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. I was close enough now that I could see the individual flecks of gold in her green eyes. I could smell her shampoo, something citrusy and sweet.
She swallowed, but still managed to project a semblance of defiance. “It is a little funny, yeah. You look ridiculous.”
I reached out, not to touch her, but to brace my hands on the arms of her deck chair, effectively trapping her. She couldn’t lean back without hitting my chest. She couldn’t go forward without running into me. Her breath hitched. The sparkling water was still on the table beside her, untouched.
“You know what else is ridiculous, Wren?” I said, leaning in close. My voice was a low growl now, a sound that always got her attention. “The way you think you can just say whatever you want, do whatever you want, and there won’t be any consequences.”
“Oh, I know there are consequences,” she murmured, her gaze dropping to my lips, then back up to my eyes. The apprehension was more evident now, but it was mixed with something else. A thrill, a spark. This was what she craved. This moment, when the tables turned, and the game shifted.
“And what exactly do you think those consequences are?” I challenged, my thumb brushing lightly against her knee, just above the hem of her shorts. A small shiver ran through her.
“You’ll… you’ll yell at me,” she said, trying to sound nonchalant, but her voice was a little breathy. “You’ll be mad for a bit. And then you’ll forgive me because I’m adorable.”
I scoffed softly. “Adorable? You’re a menace. A pain in my ass. A walking, talking, perpetually annoying headache.” I leaned in even closer, so close I could feel the warmth of her breath on my face. “But you’re right about one thing.”
Her eyes searched mine, curious and a little afraid. “What?”
“I always forgive you,” I said, and then I kissed her. Not a soft, gentle kiss. This was a kiss that devoured, that commanded, that left no room for argument. My mouth moved over hers, demanding a response, and after a moment of surprised resistance, she melted into it. Her hands came up, not to push me away, but to grasp the front of my ridiculous Hawaiian shirt, holding on tight.
I deepened the kiss, letting my tongue explore the soft cavern of her mouth, tasting the lingering sweetness of the banana. She moaned softly, a low sound in the back of her throat that sent a jolt through me. This was the payoff. This was the culmination of all her teasing, all her defiance. She pushed until I took control, until I reminded her who was really in charge.
I broke the kiss, just barely, enough to whisper against her lips, “You think you’re so clever, don’t you? Always pushing, always testing.”
She was panting slightly, her eyes half-closed. “I just… I like to see what you’ll do.”
“And now you know,” I said, my voice rough with desire. I pulled her out of the chair, lifting her easily into my arms. Her legs wrapped around my waist instinctively, her arms around my neck. The flamingo floatie lay forgotten on the grass.
“Where are we going?” she whispered, her head resting on my shoulder.
“Inside,” I said, carrying her towards the house. “We have a score to settle. And it’s not going to involve any giant birds.”
I carried her straight to the bedroom, not bothering to turn on the lights. The afternoon sun filtered through the blinds, casting long, striped shadows across the room. I set her down on the edge of the bed, but before she could even think about moving, I was on her. My hands found the hem of my t-shirt she was wearing, pulling it up and over her head in one swift motion. Her bra followed, quickly tossed aside. Her breasts were full and soft, rising and falling with her quickened breaths.
“You have a very smart mouth, Wren,” I said, my voice low and husky as I leaned down to kiss the hollow of her throat. “A very clever, very challenging mouth.”
She shivered, arching her back slightly as my lips moved lower, tracing a path down her collarbone, to the curve of her breast. “Is that… is that a complaint?” she breathed, her fingers tangling in my hair, pulling gently.
“It’s a warning,” I corrected, my tongue flicking out to tease the peak of her nipple. She gasped, her body tensing. “Because that mouth is going to be very busy today. Very, very busy.”
I took her nipple into my mouth, suckling gently, then more firmly. She cried out, her hips bucking against me. I could feel the heat radiating from her, the urgent pulse between her legs. This was it. This was where her playful rebellion always led. To this raw, undeniable hunger. To her surrendering control, not because she was forced, but because she craved it as much as I did.
I moved to her other breast, lavishing it with the same attention, while my free hand found the button of her shorts. Her fingers dug into my shoulders as I unfastened it, then the zipper. The denim slid down her thighs easily, pooling around her ankles. She was wearing nothing underneath. Of course she wasn’t. She was always prepared, always ready for where these games would inevitably lead.
“You know,” I murmured against her skin, my hand tracing the delicate line of her hip, moving lower, “you talk a big game, but you always end up exactly where I want you.”
“Only because you make me,” she whispered, her voice thick with desire. She was still trying to keep up the pretense of being in control, but her body was betraying her. Her hips were grinding against mine, seeking friction, seeking release.
I pulled back slightly, looking into her eyes. They were glazed over, heavy-lidded. “Oh, I don’t make you do anything, Wren. You love this. You love being taken down a peg. You love feeling out of control, just for a little while.”
Her cheeks flushed, but she didn’t deny it. Instead, she just stared at me, her gaze intense, pleading. That was her silent confession. That was her surrender.
I shed my own clothes quickly, tossing the Hawaiian shirt and my shorts onto the floor. Then I was back on the bed, pressing her back into the pillows. Her legs parted almost automatically, inviting me in. I slid between them, feeling her heat, the wet readiness that told me she was more than ready.
“Say it,” I commanded, my voice rough. “Tell me what you want.”
Her eyes squeezed shut for a moment, then fluttered open. “I want you to… to shut me up,” she panted, her voice trembling. “I want you to make me forget how to talk.”
That was all I needed. I leaned down, kissing her deeply, thoroughly, and then I entered her. Slowly at first, letting her adjust, letting her body mold itself around mine. She gasped, a deep, guttural sound, her legs tightening around my waist, pulling me in deeper.
“Is that enough to shut you up, Wren?” I growled against her mouth, moving steadily now, finding a rhythm that made her moan and arch beneath me.
She couldn’t speak, not really. Only short, breathless sounds escaped her lips. Her hands were gripping my back, her nails digging in, leaving faint red marks on my skin. She was completely consumed, completely focused on the sensations rippling through her body.
I picked up the pace, driving into her with a raw urgency. Each thrust was a reminder, a reaffirmation of who was in charge. Her head tossed back and forth on the pillow, her mouth open in a quiet cry. She was no longer the defiant brat. She was pure sensation, pure desire.
“You like this, don’t you?” I whispered, leaning down to nip at her earlobe. “Being reminded who runs things?”
She whimpered in response, her hips rising to meet every one of my thrusts. She was pushing back now, but not in defiance. She was pushing back with her need, her hunger mirroring mine. It was a beautiful, raw dance, where every movement was a conversation, every touch a confirmation.
Her climax hit her first, a sudden, violent shudder that rippled through her entire body. She cried out, a loud, uninhibited sound that filled the room. Her nails dug in harder, her body convulsed around mine, milking every last drop of pleasure from me.
I watched her, felt her, and then my own release crashed over me, hot and powerful. I spilled into her, groaning her name, collapsing onto her, breathless and spent. Her arms came around me, holding me tight, her cheek pressed against my shoulder.
We lay there for a long time, the only sounds our ragged breaths and the distant chirping of birds. The sun had shifted, casting new patterns of light and shadow on the walls. Eventually, Wren stirred, lifting her head to look at me.
Her eyes were still heavy, her lips swollen from our kisses. She looked completely undone, completely satisfied. “So,” she said, her voice raspy, a hint of her usual mischief returning, “I guess I lost that round.”
I chuckled, pulling her closer. “You didn’t lose, Wren. You won. You always win. Because no matter how much you push, no matter how much you try to annoy me, this is where we always end up. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
She smiled, a soft, genuine smile that always melted me. “Good. Because I have a feeling I’m going to have a lot more smart things to say in the future.”
I just shook my head, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.” And I knew, with absolute certainty, that she was right. The games would continue. The teasing, the pushing, the endless testing of my patience. But I also knew where it would always lead. Back to this, to us, entangled and breathless, the playful defiance temporarily silenced, but never truly gone.
