Night Shift Report

Office Fantasy 15 min read 3839 words

“You sure you want to tackle this tonight, Sarah?” Mark’s voice cut through the sterile quiet of the deserted office floor. It was almost seven, the cleaning crew would be making their rounds soon. Most people had packed up hours ago, leaving the fluorescent lights to hum over empty desks and silent monitors. I was still staring at the Q3 budget projections, a knot tightening in my stomach.

“Someone has to, Mark. This report is due first thing tomorrow. And frankly, the numbers are a mess. We can’t present this as is.” I pushed my glasses higher on my nose, rubbing at the bridge. My eyes felt gritty, the kind of tired that seeped into your bones.

He walked over, his silhouette casting a long shadow across my screen. I could feel the residual warmth from his body as he leaned over my chair, a faint, clean smell — something like expensive soap and crisp cotton — reaching me. “Let me see.” His finger, surprisingly gentle, tapped a column on my spreadsheet. “This variance… it’s bigger than it looks on paper. Did anyone flag this before?”

“Nope. That’s the joy of being the last line of defense, I guess.” I sighed, leaning back, letting my head rest against the cold leather of my office chair. The stress of the day was catching up to me, a dull ache behind my eyes. I looked up at him. Mark was usually so composed, so unreadable in meetings, but tonight, his brow was furrowed, a genuine concern etched into his features. He looked good in the muted office light, the way his dark hair fell across his forehead, the slight stubble on his jawline that hinted at a long day.

“Alright,” he said, straightening up. “Let’s order some food. This is going to be a long one. What are you thinking? Thai? Pizza?”

“Thai sounds good. Something spicy.” My stomach rumbled in agreement. It had been hours since lunch, and the thought of digging into spreadsheets on an empty stomach was making me lightheaded.

He nodded, pulling out his phone. “Pad See Ew for me. Extra spicy. You want the usual Pad Thai?”

“How do you know my usual?” I asked, a small smile playing on my lips. We’d worked together for three years, but our interactions were always strictly professional, always in a group setting. I didn’t think he paid that much attention.

He glanced at me, a quick, almost imperceptible flicker in his eyes. “I’ve seen you order at enough team lunches, Sarah. It’s not exactly top secret information.” He almost smirked. “Two Pad Thais it is, then.”

While he placed the order, I went back to the numbers, trying to make sense of the conflicting reports. The silence in the office was deeper now, the kind that made every keyboard click sound amplified. I found myself acutely aware of Mark’s presence, the quiet rustle of his clothes as he moved, the low murmur of his voice as he spoke to the restaurant. It was different, just the two of us. Normally, there was the constant ebb and flow of conversations, the clatter of keyboards, the occasional burst of laughter. Now, it was just us, and the data.

About forty-five minutes later, the food arrived. Mark had gone down to meet the delivery guy. He came back carrying a plastic bag, the delicious aroma of stir-fried noodles wafting through the air. He set it down on a vacant desk, pulling out containers and plastic forks.

“Alright, let’s take a break for five. My brain needs a refuel.” He gestured to the food. I walked over, my stomach grumbling again. We ate in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the only sounds the clinking of forks against plastic and the occasional sigh of satisfaction.

“This is good,” I said, my mouth full of noodles. “Thanks, Mark.”

He looked up, a small smudge of sauce at the corner of his mouth. “Anything to make these budget reports less painful.” He paused, then wiped his mouth with a napkin. “Seriously though, you’ve been burning the candle at both ends lately. Everything alright?”

“Yeah, just… a lot on my plate. With the new system rollout, and then this budget mess. It’s been a bit much.” I tried to sound nonchalant, but the truth was, I was exhausted. I was always the one to pick up the slack, to stay late, to make sure things got done. It was my nature, but it was also draining.

He watched me for a moment, his expression unreadable. “You’re a good project manager, Sarah. You catch things others miss.” His praise, quiet and sincere, felt surprisingly warm. I wasn’t used to direct compliments from him, especially not like this, without an audience.

“Thanks, Mark. That means a lot.” I felt a blush creep up my neck. I quickly focused back on my food, trying to ignore the sudden flutter in my chest.

We finished eating, and then, with renewed energy, we dove back into the spreadsheets. Hours blurred. We went through line item after line item, cross-referencing, re-calculating, trying to find the source of the discrepancy. The conversation flowed easily between us, a natural back-and-forth of ideas and suggestions. I found myself enjoying the problem-solving, the collaborative effort, more than I expected.

Around eleven, I finally found it. A single, misplaced decimal point in a supplier invoice from three months ago. It had snowballed, affecting subsequent calculations, throwing the entire quarter’s projections off by a significant margin.

“There!” I exclaimed, pointing at the screen, a triumphant surge going through me. “Look! It’s right here. One tiny error, causing all this chaos.”

Mark leaned in, his arm brushing mine as he peered at the screen. The contact was brief, but it sent a jolt through me. I could feel the warmth of his skin, the slight pressure of his bicep against my arm. I tried to focus on the numbers, but my attention was snagged, pulled by the unexpected intimacy of the moment.

“Son of a bitch,” he breathed, a low chuckle escaping him. “You found it. I knew you would.” He straightened up, a genuine smile spreading across his face. He looked relieved, and something else – appreciative. “That’s fantastic, Sarah. Thank God for your eagle eyes.”

“Just doing my job,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. But my heart was thrumming a little faster than usual. It was late, we were alone, and the tension that had been purely professional all day was starting to shift, to morph into something else.

“No, not ‘just doing your job.’ You stayed, you dug, you found it. Most people would have just patched it up and hoped no one noticed. You didn’t.” He took a step closer, and I felt myself subtly pull back in my chair, not wanting to seem too eager, too affected. He was my director, after all. There were lines.

He noticed my slight withdrawal, and his smile softened, a hint of something unreadable in his eyes. “We can fix this now. It’ll take another hour or so to run the new reports, but we’ll be good to go.”

“Great.” My voice was a little breathy. I suddenly felt very aware of my rumpled clothes, the faint sheen on my forehead, my hair probably escaping its ponytail. I felt a pang of self-consciousness.

“You look like you could use a drink,” he said, his voice dropping a notch. “My office. There’s a bottle of something decent in the back of my cabinet. Celebrate a job well done?”

My mind raced. This was definitely outside the realm of normal work interactions. A drink in his office, late at night, just the two of us. It was tempting. More than tempting, it was a siren song to the part of me that craved a break from the relentless professionalism, from the constant guard I kept up.

“A small one,” I said, trying to sound casual. “To calm the nerves after that hunt.”

He smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. “Good. Follow me.”

His office was larger than mine, with a window overlooking the city, now a sprawling tapestry of lights against the dark sky. He flicked on a small, standing lamp in the corner, casting the room in a softer, more intimate glow than the harsh fluorescents of the main floor. He walked over to a dark wooden cabinet, pulling out two small glasses and a bottle of amber liquid. Whiskey. Of course, it was whiskey.

He poured two generous measures, the clinking of the ice cubes the only sound. He handed me one. Our fingers brushed, and this time, the jolt was undeniable, a current passing between us. I met his eyes. There was a directness there, a question, an unspoken invitation. My heart hammered against my ribs.

“To fixing Q3,” he said, raising his glass. His voice was low, a pleasant rasp.

“To fixing Q3,” I echoed, taking a sip. The whiskey was smooth, warm, and immediately began to loosen the tight coils of stress in my shoulders. I felt a sudden lightness, a dangerous freedom.

We sat in the two armchairs facing the window, the city lights twinkling outside. The conversation drifted away from budget reports and variances, moving to more personal topics. He asked about my weekend plans, about my hobbies outside of work. I found myself opening up, talking about my love for hiking, my plans to visit my sister next month. He listened, truly listened, his eyes fixed on me, a rare quality in a world of distracted half-attention.

He talked about his own life, about his kids who were away at college, about his ex-wife, a brief, almost dismissive mention. It was more than he’d ever shared, and it made him seem more human, less the formidable director I usually saw.

“It’s funny,” I said, swirling the ice in my glass. “I’ve worked with you for years, but I feel like I know more about you in the last hour than I have in all that time.”

He chuckled, a deep, resonant sound. “Same, Sarah. Same. You’re usually so focused, so by-the-book. I wouldn’t have pegged you for a whiskey drinker, or a hiker.” He leaned forward slightly, his elbow resting on his knee. “I like it.”

My breath hitched. The compliment, the way he said it, the intimacy of the moment – it was all getting to me. The whiskey was making me brave, or perhaps just less guarded. I looked at him, really looked at him, the way the soft light highlighted the lines around his eyes, the strength in his jaw. He was attractive, undeniably so.

“You’re not exactly an open book yourself, Mark,” I countered, my voice softer than I intended. “Always the calm, collected director. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you sweat, even when the shit hits the fan.”

He leaned back, a thoughtful expression on his face. “There are times. Plenty of times. You just learn to hide it, I guess. Part of the job.” He took another sip of his whiskey. “But tonight… tonight feels different.”

“It does,” I agreed, my gaze dropping to my glass. The air in the room was thick with unspoken possibilities. The professional boundaries, usually so clear and rigid, were blurring, dissolving under the influence of late-night hours and whiskey.

Silence settled between us again, but this time, it wasn’t comfortable. It was charged. I could feel his eyes on me, a warmth spreading through my body that had nothing to do with the alcohol. My heart was pounding, a frantic drumbeat against my ribs. I wanted to look up, but I was afraid of what I might see, afraid of what I might betray.

“Sarah.” His voice was a low murmur, barely above a whisper. It pulled me up, my eyes meeting his. The directness was back, but now it was laced with something deeper, something hungry. His eyes, usually cool and discerning, were dark, intense.

He set his glass down on the small table between us, then reached for my hand, his fingers gently closing around mine. His skin was warm, a little rough. The touch ran, not of cold, but of pure sensation, through my entire body. My breath caught in my throat.

“I’ve wanted to do that for a while now,” he said, his thumb stroking the back of my hand. His gaze dropped to our joined hands, then back to my face. The vulnerability in his eyes was disarming. It stripped away the last vestiges of my professional armor.

“Mark,” I breathed, a warning, a question, an invitation, all rolled into one. My mind was screaming caution, but my body was leaning in, wanting more.

He didn’t release my hand. Instead, he pulled me gently towards him. I didn’t resist. I rose from my chair, drawn by an invisible thread, and found myself standing between his knees. He looked up at me, his eyes searching mine, asking permission. I gave it to him, not with words, but with the slight parting of my lips, the softening of my posture.

He reached out, his other hand coming up to cup my jaw, his thumb stroking my cheek. His touch was incredibly soft, almost reverent. “You’re beautiful, Sarah,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “Even when you’re covered in spreadsheets and stress.”

A shaky laugh escaped me. “You’re not so bad yourself, Mark. For a director.”

He smiled, a slow, sensual curve of his lips. Then, he leaned in, slowly, giving me every chance to pull away. I didn’t. Our lips met, tentative at first, a soft press. Then, he deepened the kiss, his lips moving against mine with an unhurried confidence that stole my breath. It was a slow burn, a gradual escalation, like everything else with Mark.

His hand moved from my jaw to the back of my neck, tangling in my hair, pulling me closer. My hands found their way to his shoulders, gripping the fabric of his shirt. The whiskey had dulled the edges of my inhibition, leaving me open, receptive. The kiss deepened, becoming more insistent, more demanding. His tongue traced the seam of my lips, and I parted them, inviting him in. Our tongues met, a slow, sensual dance, tasting of whiskey and something uniquely Mark.

He groaned, a low, guttural sound that vibrated through me. He pulled me down onto his lap, my legs straddling his. I gasped against his mouth, a sudden rush of heat flooding my core. The hard ridge of his erection pressed against my crotch, a solid, undeniable declaration of his desire. My body responded instantly, a liquid warmth spreading between my thighs.

Our mouths broke apart, both of us breathing heavily. His eyes were dark, almost black, burning with a desire that mirrored my own. “Sarah,” he whispered, his voice raw. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” I breathed, no hesitation, no doubt. The word was ripped from me, an instinctive response. I wanted this. I wanted him. The years of professional distance, the unspoken tension, it was all culminating in this moment, in this office, after hours.

He kissed me again, fiercely this time, his hands moving from my waist to my hips, pulling me tighter against him. I could feel the heat of his body through our clothes, the rough texture of his trousers against my jeans. My hands tangled in his hair, pulling gently, urging him on. I wanted to devour him, to strip away all the layers of professionalism and find the man underneath.

His fingers fumbled with the buttons of my blouse, his breath hot against my neck. I helped him, my own fingers trembling slightly. The fabric parted, revealing the lace of my bra. He paused, his eyes tracing the delicate material, then the swell of my breasts above it. “God, Sarah,” he whispered, his voice full of awe. “You’re incredible.”

He pushed the fabric aside, his fingers finding the front clasp of my bra. With a soft click, it came undone. My breasts spilled free, full and aching for his touch. He gazed at them for a long moment, then lowered his head, his mouth closing over one of my nipples. A gasp tore from my throat. His tongue was warm, wet, teasing, suckling with a surprising intensity. Pleasure shot through me, a sharp, exquisite ache that made my toes curl.

My back arched, my hands gripping his shoulders tighter. I whimpered, a soft, uninhibited sound. His hand moved down my side, tracing the curve of my hip, then slipping under the waistband of my jeans. His fingers, warm and calloused, brushed against the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. I shifted, instinctively grinding against him, seeking relief, seeking more.

“Easy, baby,” he murmured against my breast, his voice thick. “We’ve got all night.”

But I didn’t want easy. I wanted fast, I wanted raw, I wanted to shed every last inhibition. I pulled back from his mouth, my eyes meeting his. “I want you, Mark,” I said, my voice hoarse, devoid of any pretense. “Now.”

A dark, raw look entered his eyes. He stood up, pulling me with him, never breaking eye contact. He kicked off his shoes, then started unbuttoning his shirt. I watched, mesmerized, as the fabric parted, revealing a solid, muscular chest, dusted with dark hair. He was even more beautiful than I’d imagined, lean and strong.

I reached out, my fingers tracing the hard line of his collarbone, then venturing lower, feeling the warmth of his skin, the tautness of his muscles. He shivered at my touch, a flicker of vulnerability in his eyes that only fueled my desire.

He pulled his shirt off completely, tossing it onto the floor. Then he reached for the zipper of my jeans. My stomach clenched in anticipation. He unzipped them slowly, the sound loud in the quiet office. He pushed them down my hips, and I stepped out of them, letting them fall to my ankles. I was now standing before him in just my panties, my breasts bare, my body humming with a desperate need.

He stripped off his own trousers, then his boxers, revealing his erection, thick and pulsing, standing proudly. My eyes widened. It was magnificent. A raw, animalistic hunger flared within me.

He reached for my hand, pulling me towards his desk. Not the elegant armchair, but the solid, executive desk, covered in stacks of papers and a single, polished nameplate. He cleared a space with a sweep of his arm, sending pens and documents scattering across the floor. My heart pounded. This was it. No more pretense, no more boundaries.

He lifted me, effortlessly, onto the desk. My legs automatically wrapped around his waist. The cool, smooth surface of the desk against my bare skin was an unexpected sensation, intensifying the moment. He pushed my panties aside, his fingers finding the wet heat between my legs. I gasped, my body arching into his touch.

His fingers were skilled, knowing exactly where to press, where to tease. I cried out, a small, helpless sound as pleasure flooded me, wave after wave. I felt myself teetering on the edge, desperate for more, desperate for him.

“Please, Mark,” I begged, my voice raw with need. “Please.”

He looked up at me, his eyes blazing. “Say my name, Sarah.”

“Mark,” I whispered, almost sobbing. “Mark, I need you.”

He pulled back his fingers, and for a terrifying moment, I thought he might stop. But then he positioned himself between my legs, his erection hot and heavy against my entrance. He paused, his gaze fixed on mine, giving me one last chance to say no. I shook my head, my eyes wide with desire.

He pushed in, slowly at first, filling me completely. A gasp escaped me, a mix of pain and exquisite pleasure. My body stretched, accommodated, and then enveloped him. I clung to him, my nails digging into his shoulders, as he slowly, deliberately, began to move.

His rhythm was steady, unhurried, building the intensity with each thrust. My hips rose to meet him, matching his pace, our bodies moving in a raw dance. The sound of skin slapping against skin, our heavy breathing, the soft moans escaping my throat – it filled the quiet office, proof of the raw passion consuming us. My back arched, my head thrown back, my eyes squeezed shut as the pleasure became almost unbearable.

He sped up, his thrusts becoming deeper, more urgent. I could feel the knot in my stomach tightening, pulling, coiling towards release. I cried out his name again, over and over, lost in the sensations, in him. My body was on fire, every nerve ending alive and tingling.

“Look at me, Sarah,” he commanded, his voice a low growl. I opened my eyes, meeting his intense gaze. The sight of him, his face flushed, his eyes dark with pleasure, pushed me over the edge.

My orgasm hit me like a tidal wave, a convulsive shudder that wracked my entire body. I cried out, a long, drawn-out moan as the pleasure rippled through me, leaving me weak and trembling. He held me tight, burying his face in my neck, pushing deeper, harder, until his own release came, a guttural groan that echoed through the room.

He collapsed against me, his body heavy and spent. We stayed like that for a long moment, our breaths coming in ragged gasps, our bodies slick with sweat. The silence returned, but this time, it was filled with the afterglow of shared passion, of boundaries shattered and desires met.

He slowly pulled out of me, and I felt a pang of disappointment at the loss of his warmth, his fullness. He lifted me gently, setting me back down on my feet. He looked at me, a soft, tender smile on his face. “Well,” he said, his voice a little hoarse. “That was… productive.”

I laughed, a real, genuine laugh that bubbled up from deep within me. “Very productive, Mark.” I reached out, tracing the outline of his lips with my finger. “I think we fixed more than just the Q3 report tonight.”

He leaned in, kissing me softly, a gentle, lingering kiss that promised more. “I think we did, too, Sarah. I think we did.” He picked up his shirt, then mine. “Come on. Let’s get dressed. The cleaning crew will be here soon, and I don’t think either of us wants to explain this to them.”

We dressed in silence, a comfortable, intimate silence. The air was still thick with the aftermath of our encounter, but now, it was laced with something new: a quiet understanding, a shared secret. As we walked out of his office, and then out of the deserted building into the cool night air, I knew that work would never be the same again. And for the first time in a long time, that thought didn't fill me with dread. It filled me with a thrilling sense of anticipation.
