Project Overdue

Office Fantasy 15 min read 3995 words

“You know, I’m pretty sure the only reason they assigned us this M&A report together is because no one else would touch it with a ten-foot pole,” I said, leaning back in my chair, stretching my arms over my head until my spine cracked.

Mark didn't look up from his screen. “Or, and hear me out, we’re the two most competent people to untangle this particular shitshow.” He tapped a few keys, the rhythmic click-clack a familiar soundtrack to our late nights. He was right, of course. We were good at our jobs, annoyingly so, especially when paired. This merger was a mess, a corporate Frankenstein’s monster stitched together with bad data and worse intentions. It was also due by Friday, and it was already Tuesday night.

I swiveled my chair to face his cubicle, a small island of organized chaos next to my own. Papers were stacked neatly on his desk, but his monitor was a dizzying array of spreadsheets and legal documents. His sleeves were rolled up, revealing forearms that had no business looking that good in a corporate office. Mark wasn’t conventionally handsome – he had a sharp nose, a perpetually furrowed brow, and glasses that were always slightly smudged. But there was a intensity about him, a coiled energy that made him… compelling. He was the kind of guy who didn’t notice if you were watching him, which made watching him all the more appealing.

“Competent or sacrificial lambs?” I countered, a small smile playing on my lips. “Either way, I’m going to need more coffee if we’re going to be here until midnight again.”

He finally looked up, his eyes, a startling shade of hazel, met mine. There was a faint smudge of printer ink on his cheek. “Midnight? Optimistic. I was thinking closer to 2 AM. And yes, coffee. Black, two sugars, right?”

“You remember.” It wasn’t a question, but a quiet acknowledgement. He always remembered. The small details. The way I took my coffee, the specific font I preferred for presentations, the exact moment I started to hit a wall creatively. It was both comforting and unnerving. Comforting because it made me feel seen, unnerving because it hinted at a level of observation that felt… intimate.

“Of course. Don’t tell me you forgot how I take mine. Straight black, no sugar, no cream.” He raised an eyebrow, a challenge in his expression.

“As if. You’re a creature of habit, Mark. Predictable as a spreadsheet formula.” I pushed myself out of my chair. “Alright, coffee run. Anything else?”

“No, just… try not to get abducted by aliens on your way to the breakroom. We need this report done.” He was already back to his screen, but I caught the ghost of a smile on his lips. I hated staying late. But with Mark, the fluorescent hum of the office at 9 PM didn't feel quite so bleak. Sometimes, it even felt a little… charged.

I returned with two steaming mugs, the smell of burnt coffee a familiar comfort. He was still hunched over his keyboard, his brow furrowed in concentration. The only sound in our corner of the office was the click of his keys and the low thrum of the building's ventilation system. It was almost peaceful, in a sterile, corporate way.

“Your poison, sir,” I announced, setting his mug carefully on a coaster I’d grabbed from the breakroom. He mumbled a thanks, not looking up. I sat back down, taking a long sip of my own coffee. It was too hot, but the caffeine was already starting to prickle my senses.

We worked in silence for another hour, the rhythm of our keystrokes a quiet duet. My eyes ached, and the numbers on the screen were starting to blur. This merger was a beast, and we were wrestling it, document by document, clause by clause. Every now and then, he’d let out a frustrated sigh, or I’d mutter a curse under my breath. But mostly, it was just the work.

“Alright,” Mark finally said, leaning back and rubbing his eyes under his glasses. “I think I’ve cross-referenced all the Q4 projections. They’re still not lining up with the initial prospectus. Someone fudged the numbers, badly.”

“No shit, Sherlock. I’ve been trying to find the discrepancy in the liabilities, and it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack made of legal jargon.” I leaned my head against the cool metal of my monitor. “We’re going to have to flag it, aren’t we? There’s no way to smooth this over.”

He nodded, pushing his glasses up his nose. “No. Transparency is key, even if it means blowing up the deal. Better us than the SEC.” He stretched, his shirt pulling taut across his shoulders. I watched the movement, the way his muscles flexed. It was a purely professional observation, of course. Just appreciating the male form in its natural habitat – a cubicle farm.

“So, we write the report detailing the discrepancies, highlight the potential fraud, and brace for impact,” I summarized, already mentally drafting the email to our boss. This was not going to be a fun conversation.

“Exactly. And we need to make sure our findings are airtight. No room for misinterpretation. That means going back through every single line item again, just to be sure.” He looked at me, a weariness in his eyes that mirrored my own. “Another late night, I’m afraid.”

I sighed. “Joy. I was hoping to get more than five hours of sleep tonight.”

“Me too. My cat’s probably plotting my demise for not being home to feed her on time.” He chuckled, a low, warm sound. It was rare to hear him laugh, and it always caught me off guard. It transformed his usually serious face, softening the sharp angles, making him seem… approachable.

“At least your cat acknowledges your existence. Mine just judges me from a distance.” I picked up my mug, finding it empty. “Another round?”

He hesitated, then shook his head. “No, I’m wired enough as it is. But… how about we take a quick break? Five minutes. My brain feels like it’s going to explode.”

“Deal.” I stood up, stretching again. My legs felt stiff from sitting so long. He got up too, walking over to the small window that overlooked the deserted street below. The city lights twinkled in the distance, a stark contrast to the sterile glow of our office.

“You know,” he said, his voice softer now, less formal, “I actually don’t mind working with you. Even on this nightmare project.”

My stomach did a little flip. “Oh, really? I figured you were just tolerating my endless sarcastic commentary.”

He turned, a slight smile on his face. “No. You’re good at this. You catch things I miss. And… you make it less miserable.” He paused, and for a moment, his eyes lingered on mine. “You’re smart, and you don’t let anyone push you around. I respect that.”

The compliment caught me off guard. We were always professional, always focused on the work. This felt… different. More personal. I felt a blush creep up my neck. “Thanks, Mark. Same to you. You’re… thorough. And you don’t panic, which is a rare quality around here.”

He nodded, his gaze dropping to his hands, which he’d shoved into his pockets. “Right. Well. Five minutes are up. Back to the numbers.” The moment, whatever it was, was gone. Buried under layers of professionalism and data points. I felt a pang of something, a slight disappointment. But then again, what did I expect? We were coworkers, stuck on a terrible project. Nothing more.

The next day was a blur of emails, meetings, and more spreadsheets. We presented our findings to our boss, a harried woman named Sarah who looked like she hadn’t slept in a month. She listened, her face growing grimmer with each slide Mark presented. When he finished, detailing the suspicious discrepancies, she just nodded slowly.

“Alright,” she said, her voice tight. “Thank you both. This is… significant. I’ll need to escalate this immediately. Don’t breathe a word of this to anyone else. And keep digging. Make sure there’s nothing else we’ve missed.”

We spent the rest of the day in a bubble of paranoid productivity. Every email felt scrutinized, every conversation hushed. The air in the office felt heavy with unspoken tension. Mark and I barely spoke, communicating mostly through shared documents and terse instant messages. It was a strange kind of intimacy, this shared secret, this professional peril.

By 8 PM, the office was once again emptying out. Sarah had left hours ago, her face etched with worry. Mark and I were the last ones left in our department, still sifting through data, trying to find any missing piece that might explain away the fraud. We both knew there wasn’t one, but we had to be absolutely certain.

“I’m starving,” I announced, my stomach rumbling in protest. “I think my brain cells are cannibalizing each other.”

Mark chuckled, a little tired. “Yeah, I could eat a horse. Or at least, a very large pizza.”

“Pizza sounds good. My treat. As a thank you for not letting me go insane on this project.” I pulled out my phone, already scrolling through delivery apps.

“No, my treat. Consider it a thank you for keeping me sane.” He reached for his wallet. “What kind are you in the mood for?”

We settled on a pepperoni and mushroom, half regular, half with extra jalapeños for me. We ate in the breakroom, the fluorescent lights humming above us, the only sounds the rustle of the pizza box and the occasional slurp of soda. It felt… normal, in an abnormal situation. Like a brief reprieve from the corporate chaos.

“This is surprisingly good for office pizza,” I mumbled, a piece of pepperoni dangling from my chin.

He laughed, a genuine, easy laugh this time. “You say that like you’re surprised anything good could come out of this building.” He reached over, his thumb gently wiping the pepperoni from my chin. The contact was brief, barely there, but it sent a jolt through me. My breath hitched. He didn't seem to notice, or if he did, he didn't show it.

“I’m just saying,” I managed, my voice a little rougher than I intended, “it’s a low bar.”

We finished the pizza, the conversation flowing easily. We talked about our lives outside of work – our pets, our favorite books, the terrible dating app experiences we’d both endured. It was the most we’d ever talked, really. The boundaries, usually so rigidly in place, seemed to soften under the influence of exhaustion and shared pizza.

“I should probably get back to it,” he said eventually, standing up and stretching. “Still have to check the footnotes in the acquisition agreement.”

“Yeah, me too. One last pass through the balance sheets.” I stood up, gathering the empty pizza box and soda cans. “Thanks for dinner, Mark.”

“Anytime.” He smiled, and this time, it lingered. There was something in his eyes, something warm and… interested. It wasn’t just professional courtesy. It was something more.

We worked for another two hours. The office was completely silent now, save for our occasional sighs and the gentle hum of our computers. My eyelids felt heavy, and my brain was screaming for a break. I leaned back in my chair, closing my eyes for a moment, just to rest them.

“You okay?” Mark’s voice was soft, close. I opened my eyes to find him standing next to my desk, looking down at me. His face was etched with fatigue, but his eyes were still sharp, still observant.

“Just… tired. My eyes feel like sandpaper.” I rubbed them, feeling the grit of exhaustion.

“Mine too. We’ve been at this for twelve hours today, what with the meetings and everything.” He paused. “Look, I think we’ve done everything we can for tonight. We have a solid report. We’ve double-checked everything. Any more and we’ll just start making mistakes.”

“You really think so?” I asked, a wave of relief washing over me. The thought of going home, of sleeping in my own bed, felt like a luxury I hadn’t dared to dream of.

“Yeah. Let’s call it a night. We can review everything again first thing in the morning, with fresh eyes.” He hesitated, then reached out, his fingers brushing my shoulder. “You’ve done good work, Alex. Really good.”

The warmth of his touch spread through me, a surprising comfort. “You too, Mark. Couldn’t have done it without you.” My voice was barely a whisper.

He retracted his hand, but his eyes still held mine. There was a question in them, an unspoken desire that mirrored my own. The air between us felt thick, charged with something that had nothing to do with corporate fraud or financial discrepancies. It was raw, immediate, and utterly captivating.

“So,” he said, his voice a little husky. “I guess I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Yeah. Morning.” I stood up slowly, feeling a little unsteady on my feet. My body was tired, but my mind was suddenly wide awake, alert to every subtle shift in the atmosphere.

We walked to the elevators in silence, the quiet thud of our footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. The thought of just saying goodnight, of going our separate ways, felt… wrong. Incomplete. After all this, after the long hours, the shared stress, the quiet intimacy of the past few nights, it felt like there was something unfinished between us.

We reached the elevators. He pressed the down button. The doors opened with a soft chime. He looked at me, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes.

“Alex,” he said, his voice low, “I… I know this is probably a bad idea, but…” He trailed off, his gaze dropping to my lips.

My heart hammered against my ribs. “But what, Mark?” I prompted, my voice almost too quiet to hear.

He stepped closer, closing the small distance between us. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, the faint scent of coffee and his own unique musk. “I’ve been thinking about this all week,” he confessed, his voice rough. “About you.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Mark…”

“I know,” he cut me off, his hand reaching out to cup my cheek. His thumb stroked my skin, a gentle, deliberate movement that sent shivers down my spine. “I know it’s unprofessional. I know it’s stupid. But I can’t stop thinking about it.”

His eyes searched mine, raw and vulnerable. I saw my own unspoken desire reflected there. All the glances, the shared smiles, the late-night conversations – it all coalesced into this one moment, this electric tension that had been simmering between us for days, for weeks, maybe even months.

“What are you thinking about?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

He leaned in, his lips just a breath away from mine. “This,” he murmured, his gaze still locked with mine. Then, he closed the distance. His lips were soft at first, a tentative brush that quickly deepened. It was a kiss born of exhaustion and pent-up desire, a culmination of all the unspoken things that had been hanging in the air between us.

My hands found their way to his shoulders, gripping the fabric of his shirt. His arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer until there was no space left between us. His mouth moved against mine with an increasing urgency, a hungry exploration that left me breathless. I tasted coffee, and something else – something warm and uniquely him.

He broke the kiss, just enough to catch his breath, his forehead resting against mine. “Alex,” he breathed, his voice ragged. “God, Alex.”

My fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer. “Don’t stop,” I pleaded, my voice hoarse. “Please, don’t stop.”

He didn’t. His lips found mine again, harder this time, more demanding. His hand slipped from my waist, moving to the small of my back, pressing me flush against him. I could feel the hard line of his body against mine, the undeniable evidence of his arousal. A moan escaped my throat, lost in the intensity of the kiss.

He began to trail kisses down my jawline, along my neck, his stubble scratching deliciously against my skin. My head fell back, exposing my throat to his ministrations. Every touch, every kiss, sent a wave of heat through me. The office, the late hour, the looming fraud report – it all faded away, leaving only the two of us, caught in this thrilling, forbidden moment.

“We shouldn’t,” I managed, a weak protest that even I didn’t believe. My hands were already unbuttoning his shirt, my fingers fumbling with the small plastic buttons.

“I know,” he breathed, his lips still grazing my neck. “But I can’t seem to care right now.” He pulled back, just enough to look at me, his eyes dark with desire. “Do you care?”

I shook my head, my eyes wide. “No. No, I don’t.”

A small smile touched his lips, a triumphant, almost predatory smile. He reached behind me, his fingers finding the zipper of my dress. It was a simple black sheath, appropriate for the office, but now it felt like a barrier, a hindrance. He slowly, deliberately, pulled the zipper down, the cool metal a stark contrast to the heat of his touch. The fabric parted, revealing the curve of my back, the delicate lace of my bra.

He peeled the dress down my shoulders, letting it fall to the floor in a silken puddle around my feet. I stood before him in my bra and panties, exposed, vulnerable, and utterly consumed by him. He took a step back, his eyes devouring me, a slow, appreciative gaze that made my skin tingle.

“Beautiful,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “Absolutely beautiful.”

I felt a blush spread across my chest, but it wasn't shame. It was arousal. I reached out, my hands finding the buttons of his shirt again, this time with more purpose. I ripped them open, revealing the expanse of his chest, the smattering of dark hair that trailed down towards his belt. He was lean, but surprisingly muscular, a strength hidden beneath the corporate attire.

He shrugged out of his shirt, letting it drop to the floor to join my dress. Then he reached for my hand, pulling me towards him, until our bare skin met. The contact was electric, a jolt of pure sensation. My nipples hardened instantly, pressing against the lace of my bra.

He kissed me again, deeper, more hungrily than before. His hands roamed over my back, tracing the curve of my spine, before sliding down to cup my ass, pulling me even tighter against his erection. I gasped into his mouth, my own hands exploring the taut muscles of his back, the warmth of his skin.

“Alex,” he whispered, breaking the kiss, his lips hovering inches from mine. “My office. It’s… it’s closer.”

I didn’t need an explanation. I understood. We couldn't stay in the hallway, exposed to anyone who might still be lurking in the building. I nodded, my breath still coming in ragged gasps. He took my hand, his fingers intertwining with mine, and led me to his cubicle, then to the small, enclosed office he occasionally used for confidential calls.

He pushed the door shut behind us, the soft click echoing in the small room. Then he turned, his eyes burning into mine, and I knew, knowing that thrilled me, that this was just the beginning. The report, the fraud, the professional boundaries – they were all forgotten. In this moment, under the fluorescent glow of the office, there was only him, and me, and the raw, undeniable hunger that had finally, spectacularly, broken free.

He backed me up against his desk, the edge pressing into my lower back. His hands found my hips, lifting me, and I wrapped my legs around his waist instinctively. He pushed forward, and I felt the hard, insistent press of him against my panties. It was a desperate, seeking friction that made my head swim.

“I want you,” he whispered, his voice rough with desire. “So fucking much, Alex.”

“I want you too, Mark,” I gasped, my fingers digging into his shoulders. “Now. Please.”

He groaned, a low, guttural sound, and pulled away just long enough to shed his pants and boxers. I watched, my heart pounding, as he stood before me, fully erect, a magnificent display of pure masculine desire. Then he was back, pressing against me, his body a burning inferno against mine.

He pulled down my panties, tearing them in his haste, and then he was there, hot and hard against my entrance. I whimpered, a low sound of anticipation. He looked at me, his eyes dark with a raw hunger, and then, with one powerful thrust, he entered me. I cried out, a mixture of pain and exquisite pleasure as he filled me, stretching me, claiming me.

He paused, letting me adjust to the incredible fullness, his breath heavy in my ear. Then he began to move, a slow, deliberate rhythm that quickly picked up pace. Each thrust drove me higher, deeper, until my body was a symphony of sensation. The desk pressed against my back, the cool surface a sharp contrast to the burning heat between my legs. I wrapped my legs tighter around his waist, urging him on, meeting his every thrust with an equal urgency.

“Mark,” I gasped, my nails digging into his back. “Oh god, Mark.”

He grunted, his body straining, his face contorted in an expression of pure ecstasy. He leaned down, burying his face in my neck, his teeth gently nipping at my skin. “Alex. You feel so good. So goddamn good.”

The rhythm intensified, a relentless pounding that drove me to the brink. My climax built quickly, a searing wave of pleasure that consumed me whole. I cried out, my body convulsing around him, my fingers clutching at his shoulders as if to hold on for dear life. He held me tight, his own climax hitting moments later, a deep groan rumbling from his chest as he poured himself into me.

We stayed like that for a long moment, our bodies pressed together, our breaths ragged, the only sounds the pounding of our hearts and the lingering echoes of our pleasure. The office was silent once more, but now it felt different. It was no longer sterile and cold. It was warm, intimate, infused with the raw aftermath of our shared passion.

He slowly pulled out of me, and I felt a pang of loss, even as a small sigh of relief escaped my lips. He helped me slide off the desk, and we stood there, naked and breathless, in the quiet of his office. He reached out, his fingers gently touching my cheek, his eyes full of a tenderness that made my own eyes prickle.

“I… wow,” he managed, a small, slightly bewildered smile on his face.

I chuckled, a little weak. “Yeah. Wow.”

He leaned down and kissed me again, a soft, lingering kiss that was both a promise and a question. The silence that followed was comfortable, intimate. We both knew this wasn’t just a one-off. This was something more. This was the beginning of something new, something reckless, something thrilling.

Eventually, we dressed, our movements slow and deliberate. The fluorescent lights seemed brighter now, almost glaring. The corporate world was still waiting outside the door, but for a brief, glorious moment, we had forgotten all about it. We had created our own world, a world of raw desire and unspoken longing, in the most unlikely of places. As we walked out of his office, the empty hallway no longer felt lonely. It felt like a secret we shared, a promise whispered in the dead of night, under the cold, indifferent gaze of the office lights.
