“Are you ever going to actually put those away?” Mark asked, nodding at the stack of folded laundry teetering precariously on the edge of the dresser.
Chloe looked up from her phone, a slow, deliberate blink. “Eventually. What’s the rush?” She went back to scrolling through Instagram, her thumb swiping with practiced ease. The laundry had been there since Tuesday. It was now Friday.
Mark sighed, a long-suffering sound he didn’t bother to hide. He walked over and picked up a pair of his own boxers from the top of the pile. “The rush is that we live in a small apartment, and that’s prime real estate.” He tossed them lightly at her, aiming for her lap. They landed on her stomach instead, a soft cotton thud.
She peered over the top of her phone. “Rude. And I was just about to do it, you know.” Her tone was light, dismissive, but there was a flicker in her eyes, a challenge he knew well. She liked to push, to see how far she could stretch his patience before he snapped.
“No, you weren’t,” he countered, picking up a stray sock and dropping it into the laundry basket that was somehow still half-full from the load he’d done a week ago. “You were just about to scroll another hour away and then claim you were too tired.”
She actually giggled, a bright, unapologetic sound. “You know me too well, babe.” She sat up, finally, letting her phone fall to the bed beside her. Her dark hair was a mess around her shoulders, and her tank top was twisted. He found it unfairly attractive. “Okay, okay, I’ll do it. But only if you help.” She held out a pair of his jeans, dangling them like a peace offering.
He raised an eyebrow. “Help? I folded all of this. You just need to put it in the drawers.”
“Semantics,” she chirped, and then, before he could object, she stood up, grabbed his hand, and started pulling him towards the dresser. “Come on, don’t be a grump. It’ll be faster with two.” She gave him a sweet, innocent smile that he knew was a complete lie. She just liked making him do things, even if it was for her own benefit.
He let himself be pulled, a familiar routine. She’d make a mess, he’d complain, she’d charm him into helping clean it up, and they’d end up laughing about it. Or, sometimes, he’d lose his temper, and that was a different kind of fun for her. He never quite knew which way it would go, and that was part of the appeal, he supposed.
Later that evening, after a surprisingly efficient laundry-putting-away session (mostly because he did most of it while she ‘supervised’ from the bed), they were watching a movie. Or, rather, Mark was watching a movie. Chloe was playing a game on her phone, the soft taps of her fingers on the screen a contrast to the dramatic orchestral score.
“Are you even watching this?” he asked, not looking away from the screen. A car chase was reaching its climax.
“Mmm-hmm,” she hummed, not looking up. “He’s about to jump the bridge, right?”
He paused, then glanced at her. “How do you know that? You haven’t looked up once.”
She finally tore her eyes from her phone, a mischievous glint in them. “Peripheral vision. Also, they always jump the bridge in these movies. It’s a trope.” She winked, then went back to her game. The car on screen did, indeed, jump the bridge, exploding in a shower of sparks and slow-motion debris.
Mark shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips. “You’re impossible.”
“But you love me anyway,” she sang, and then, without warning, she stretched her legs out, planting her bare feet squarely on his lap. Her toes, painted a bright coral, wiggled playfully. Her feet were cold.
“Hey!” He tried to push them off, but she held firm, pressing them down with surprising strength. “They’re freezing, Chloe.”
“Exactly,” she said, wiggling her toes further, digging her heel into his thigh. “Warm them up for me.”
He gripped her ankles, half-tempted to tickle her, knowing it would result in a full-blown wrestling match on the couch. “This is rude. I’m trying to watch the movie.”
“And I’m trying to get warm,” she retorted, pulling her feet back a fraction, only to push them forward again, harder. “Just five minutes. Please?” Her voice took on a wheedling quality that was usually irresistible. Usually.
“No,” he said, his voice firm. He hated cold feet on his lap. “Take them off.”
She pouted, a theatrical display. “Fine. Be that way.” She slowly, dramatically, removed her feet. But as she did, her big toe brushed against his crotch, a feather-light touch that was undeniably intentional. His breath hitched.
She smiled, a slow, knowing curve of her lips. “Oops. My bad.” But her eyes told a different story. They were sparkling with mischief, daring him.
He reached out and grabbed her ankle again, this time with a purpose. He didn’t let go. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you?” His voice was low, a little rougher than before. The movie was forgotten.
Her smile widened. “Sometimes. What are you going to do about it?” She tilted her head, her dark hair falling over one shoulder. She was openly challenging him now, the playfulness in her eyes giving way to something deeper, more provocative.
He pulled her ankle, gently but firmly, until her leg was bent at the knee, her foot resting on his thigh again, but this time, he was holding it, not her. He looked at her, really looked at her, and saw the hunger beneath the teasing. He saw the need for him to take charge, even if she wouldn’t admit it. “I think,” he said, his voice dropping to a near whisper, “I’m going to make you regret being such a brat.”
Her eyes widened just a fraction, and a small gasp escaped her lips. The challenge was still there, but now it was tinged with anticipation, with a hint of fear that only made her more excited. “Oh yeah? How?” Her voice was almost too quiet to hear.
He didn’t answer. Instead, he leaned forward, closing the distance between them. Her phone lay abandoned on the cushion, its screen dark. His hand, still holding her ankle, began to trace slow circles on her calf. He watched her face, watched the way her breath hitched, watched the flush rise on her cheeks.
Mark had been working from home for weeks, the constant presence of Chloe, bless her heart, a unique test of his self-control. Today, she’d decided that his carefully curated Spotify playlist was boring. His carefully curated work-from-home schedule was also apparently boring.
“Do you have to listen to that elevator music all day?” she’d asked earlier, leaning against the doorframe of his makeshift office in the living room. He’d been trying to focus on a particularly complex spreadsheet.
“It’s lo-fi jazz,” he’d corrected, not looking up. “It helps me concentrate.”
“It helps me want to fall asleep,” she’d yawned, stretching languidly. “Can’t we put on something with, like, actual words? Or a beat?”
He’d ignored her, because he knew where this was going. She’d start with suggestions, then demands, then she’d just do it, because she knew he wouldn’t actually get up and stop her when he was in the middle of something important. And then he’d be stuck listening to whatever pop garbage she was into that week.
Sure enough, an hour later, the smooth, calming strains of a saxophone were abruptly replaced by a thumping bassline and some auto-tuned vocals about heartbreak. He squeezed his eyes shut, counted to ten, and reopened them. Chloe was nowhere to be seen, but the music was blaring from the living room speakers.
He tried to work through it, really he did. He put on his noise-canceling headphones, but the bass vibrated through the floorboards. After fifteen minutes of trying to decipher data to a club beat, he ripped off his headphones, stood up, and marched into the living room.
Chloe was dancing. Not just swaying, but full-on, arms-waving, hips-swaying dancing, right in the middle of the living room, singing along at the top of her lungs, completely off-key. She was wearing one of his old band t-shirts, which hung loosely around her, and nothing else that he could see. Her hair was flying around her face, and she was grinning like a madwoman.
She saw him, and instead of stopping, she just ramped it up, turning her back to him and swaying her hips in a provocative way, glancing back over her shoulder, her eyes full of mirth and defiance. “What’s wrong, old man? Can’t handle a little rhythm?”
He stood there, hands on his hips, trying to look stern. It was hard, though. The sight of her, so uninhibited and joyful, was disarming. And, he had to admit, incredibly sexy. “Chloe,” he said, his voice a low warning. “I’m trying to work.”
She spun around, facing him again, her movements fluid and seductive. “Work, work, work,” she mimicked, rolling her eyes. “Don’t you ever just want to… live a little? Dance a little?” She held out a hand to him, inviting him into her impromptu dance party.
“No, I want to finish this report so I don’t get fired,” he stated, resisting the urge to smile. “Turn it down. Now.”
She pouted. “But it’s my favorite part!” She continued to dance, ignoring him, her gaze challenging him to do something about it. The song built to a crescendo, and she jumped, punching the air, completely lost in the moment.
He walked over to the stereo, his jaw set. He reached for the volume knob. Before his fingers could touch it, she was there, her hand covering his, effectively blocking him. Her skin was warm against his. “No!” she shrieked, half-laughing. “Don’t you dare!”
He looked down at her, his eyes serious. “Chloe. I’m not playing.”
Her laughter died down, but the defiance in her eyes remained. She leaned into him, pressing her body against his, her head tilted back to look up at him. “But I am,” she whispered, her voice husky now, the teasing still there, but laced with something deeper. “I’m always playing.” She shifted her hips, a slow, deliberate grind against his. The music pulsed around them, a rhythmic heartbeat.
His resolve wavered. He could feel the warmth of her body, the soft curve of her breast against his chest, the way her hips moved against his. He could smell her, a faint, sweet scent of her shampoo and her own skin. He found himself inhaling deeply, his body responding even as his mind told him to stop.
“You’re really pushing it today, aren’t you?” he murmured, his voice rough. He could feel the familiar tension building in his chest, a mixture of frustration and desire. She loved this, loved seeing him struggle, loved seeing him on the edge.
She looked up at him, her eyes wide and innocent, though he knew better. “Am I?” Her hand, still on his, began to trace patterns on the back of his fingers, a light, teasing touch that made his skin prickle. “What are you going to do about it, Mark?”
He removed his hand from hers, not to turn down the music, but to cup her face, his thumb brushing against her cheekbone. Her eyes flickered, the playfulness giving way to a raw anticipation. “I think,” he said, his voice low and firm, “I’m going to teach you a lesson about interrupting my work.”
He pulled her close, so close their bodies were flush. Her lips parted slightly, a quiet invitation. He lowered his head, not to kiss her, but to whisper in her ear, his breath warm against her skin. “And about ignoring me. And about turning my office into a nightclub.” He felt a shiver run through her, a tiny tremor that confirmed he was on the right track.
Her hands, which had been resting lightly on his chest, now gripped his shirt, pulling him even closer. “Oh?” she breathed, her voice a little shaky. “Is that so?”
He finally kissed her then, a deep, possessive kiss that left no room for protest. Her lips were soft and yielding, tasting of something sweet and undeniably hers. He felt her response immediately, a surge of heat and hunger that matched his own. Her fingers fisted in his shirt, then tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss.
The music, still blaring, suddenly seemed to fade into the background, becoming just another part of the chaotic, wonderful symphony of their shared desire. He broke the kiss, just barely, their foreheads resting against each other. Her eyes were half-closed, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
“Still want to dance?” he asked, his voice a low growl.
She opened her eyes, a slow, languid movement. A smile, a truly unrepentant smile, bloomed on her face. “Only if you lead,” she whispered, and then, with a playful nip at his lower lip, she added, “And only if it’s a slow dance.”
He didn’t answer with words. He answered by scooping her into his arms, carrying her easily, and heading towards the bedroom. Her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist, her arms around his neck. She pressed a series of soft, open-mouthed kisses along his jawline, a purr rumbling in her throat. The music continued to play, a forgotten soundtrack to their escalating intimacy.
He kicked the bedroom door shut with his foot, the sound echoing softly in the now relatively quiet room. He lowered her gently onto the bed, her body sinking into the soft mattress. She lay there, looking up at him, her eyes dark and full of wanting. Her lips were swollen from his kisses, and her chest rose and fell rapidly.
He leaned over her, bracing himself with his hands on either side of her head. “You know,” he began, his voice a low, teasing murmur, “I think I liked the part where you were dancing in my shirt. That was… an interesting development.”
She giggled, a soft, breathy sound. “Oh? Did it distract you from your very important spreadsheets?” Her hands reached up, tracing the line of his jaw, her touch light and exploratory. “Perhaps that was the intention all along.”
He narrowed his eyes, a playful scowl on his face. “You’re admitting to sabotage now?”
“Maybe,” she said, her smile widening. “Or maybe I was just feeling… neglected. You’ve been very focused on work lately, Mark. A girl has needs, you know.” Her fingers dipped lower, playing with the collar of his t-shirt, tugging at the fabric. Her eyes never left his, a challenge still burning in their depths.
He leaned in closer, his lips brushing against hers. “And what kind of needs are those, Chloe?” His voice was a low growl, a question and a promise rolled into one.
She shivered, a sharp tremor that went through her entire body. “The kind that involve… attention. Lots and lots of attention. And maybe a little bit of… dominance.” She said the last word almost in a whisper, her eyes fluttering closed for a moment before snapping back open, daring him to take her up on her unspoken request.
He paused, letting the words hang in the air between them. He loved this about her. Loved the way she pushed, the way she tested, the way she demanded. And he loved the way she always, always came back to wanting him to take control, to be the one who finally put her in her place. Not in a mean way, never in a mean way, but in a way that left her breathless and satisfied.
He slowly, deliberately, reached down and gripped her chin, tilting her head up so she was forced to meet his gaze. His eyes were dark, intense. “Is that what you want, little brat?” he asked, his voice low and firm. “You want me to dominate you?”
Her breath hitched again, and a soft moan escaped her lips. Her fingers, which had been playing with his shirt, now tightened, clutching the fabric as if for dear life. “Yes,” she whispered, her voice almost too quiet to hear. “Please. Make me.”
He smiled then, a slow, predatory smile that made her shiver again, but this time, it was a shiver of pure, unadulterated pleasure. “Good,” he said, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated through her. “Because I think it’s time you learned who’s really in charge around here.” He lowered his head and kissed her again, a kiss that was both tender and possessive, a kiss that left no doubt about his intentions. The music from the living room was a faint, distant thrum, a forgotten echo. All that mattered now was the two of them, and the delicious, intricate dance of their shared desires.
He deepened the kiss, his tongue tracing the seam of her lips, asking for entrance. She gave it freely, her mouth opening beneath his, inviting him in. Their tongues met, a soft, sensual duel that quickly escalated into a hungry embrace. Her hands moved from his shirt to tangle in his hair, pulling his head closer, demanding more.
He shifted his weight, his knee nudging between her thighs, and she responded by arching her back, pressing herself against him. A soft moan escaped her lips, a sound that made his blood run hot. He broke the kiss, trailing a path of open-mouthed kisses down her jawline, to her neck, where he lingered, tasting her skin, drawing a shiver from her. He could feel the pulse throbbing beneath his lips, a rapid beat that mirrored his own.
“You like that, do you?” he murmured against her skin, his voice husky. “You like when I take what I want?”
“Mmm,” she hummed, her fingers digging into his scalp. “More than you know.” Her breath was coming in short, quick gasps now, her body trembling beneath him. The playful defiance had melted away, replaced by a raw, unbridled need.
He moved lower, his lips finding the delicate hollow of her collarbone, then moving down to the swell of her breast, still covered by his oversized t-shirt. He tugged at the fabric, pulling it up, slowly exposing her skin. She gasped, a small, excited sound. He looked up, his eyes meeting hers, a quiet question passing between them.
Her eyes were wide, dark, and full of an heady blend of surrender and anticipation. She nodded, a tiny, almost imperceptible movement, giving him permission. He smiled, a slow, satisfied grin, and then he pulled the shirt over her head, tossing it onto the floor beside the bed. Her breasts, full and pale, sprang free, her nipples already taut and begging for his touch.
He leaned down, his gaze lingering on them, and then, very slowly, he lowered his head, taking one of her nipples into his mouth. She cried out, a sharp, surprised gasp of pleasure, her fingers tangling even tighter in his hair, pulling him closer. He suckled gently, then harder, drawing on her, teasing her with his tongue, making her writhe beneath him.
She was panting now, her hips beginning to buck against his. He could feel the heat radiating from her, the intense desire that was rapidly building between them. He moved to her other breast, giving it the same devoted attention, until she was arching against him, begging him with incoherent sounds.
He pulled back, just enough to look at her, her face flushed, her eyes half-closed, her lips swollen and glistening. “Beg for it, Chloe,” he commanded, his voice deep and firm. “Tell me what you want.”
She whimpered, her body trembling, her eyes finally opening to meet his. “You,” she gasped, her voice raw with need. “I want you, Mark. Please. Don’t stop.”
He smiled, a triumphant grin. “Good girl.” And then, with a final, deliberate movement, he stripped away the last of their clothes, leaving nothing but skin against skin, and the delicious, unyielding heat of their combined desire. The distant thrum of the music was long forgotten, replaced by the pounding of their hearts, the ragged sound of their breaths, and the symphony of their building pleasure. He leaned down, ready to make good on his promise, ready to show her exactly what happened when she dared to push him too far. And she, in turn, was more than ready to be pushed.
