Passive Aggression

Brat 11 min read 2991 words

“You think you’re so smart, don’t you?” she said, not bothering to look up from her phone. She was stretched out on the sofa, all long limbs and deliberate indifference, scrolling through something utterly uninteresting. I knew it was uninteresting because she was doing it specifically to avoid me.

“I think I’m smart enough to make dinner,” I replied, stirring the pasta. The kitchen was warm, smelling of garlic and tomatoes. A good smell. A comforting smell. One that was, apparently, beneath her current level of engagement. “Which, given the current hunger levels in this apartment, seems like a fairly high bar.”

“Oh, you’re making dinner?” She finally peeled her eyes from the screen, a slow, almost lazy movement. Her lips, glossed a bright berry red, curved into a smirk. “I thought you were just… pottering. Like a very large, very slow cat.”

I stopped stirring. “Pottering? I’m cooking. For both of us. Because someone else spent the last hour meticulously color-coding her bookshelf instead of contributing to the sustenance of the household.”

“It needed doing. The blues were next to the greens, and it was aesthetically distressing.” She swung her legs off the sofa, landing with a soft thud. Her bare feet padded across the wooden floor towards the kitchen island. She leaned against it, all casual elegance, watching me. “Besides, you love cooking. It’s your little domestic ritual. Who am I to interrupt your zen?”

“My zen involves not being mocked by a creature who survives solely on coffee and passive aggression,” I shot back, turning to face her. She had a way of standing that made her look taller than she was, all sharp angles and a confident tilt of her head. Her dark hair was pulled back in a messy bun, tendrils escaping around her face, giving her an air of disheveled chic.

“Aw, you think I’m a creature,” she cooed, taking a grape from the bowl on the counter. She popped it into her mouth, chewing slowly, her eyes never leaving mine. “Such a compliment. What kind of creature? A sleek panther? A playful otter? Or perhaps a very opinionated housecat?”

“A very opinionated housecat who needs to learn some manners,” I said, trying to keep my tone even. She was doing it on purpose. She always did. This dance, this push and pull, was her favorite game. And, frustratingly, mine too. I knew she was looking for a reaction, for me to snap, to lose my cool, to show her that she’d finally hit a nerve.

“Manners are for people who don’t know how to get what they want without them,” she replied, her voice soft, almost a purr. She took another grape, then tossed it in the air, catching it in her mouth with practiced ease. “And I always get what I want.”

“Oh, really?” I crossed my arms, leaning back against the counter. “And what is it you want right now, Princess?”

She pushed off the island, walking around it until she was standing directly in front of me. She was close enough that I could see the flecks of gold in her brown eyes, the faint dusting of freckles across her nose. She reached out, her fingertips tracing the line of my jaw. Her touch was light, almost feather-like, but it sent a jolt through me.

“I want to see if you’ll finally lose your temper,” she whispered, her voice low and husky. “I want to see you snap. To see you stop being so… reasonable all the time.”

I caught her wrist, holding it firmly. Her skin was warm under my fingers. “And what makes you think I’m not already at my limit?”

Her smirk widened. “Because you haven’t done anything yet. You’re just standing there, looking all stern and put-upon. It’s cute, in a caveman sort of way. But it’s not exactly ‘losing your temper,’ is it?”

I squeezed her wrist a little tighter. “You think I won’t?”

“I think you’re too much of a gentleman,” she said, her eyes sparkling with challenge. “Too worried about being proper. Too afraid to actually grab what you want.”

She was baiting me, of course. She knew exactly what buttons to push, which lines to cross. It was a skill she’d honed over the years, a finely tuned instrument of playful provocation. And every time, I fell for it. Not because I was weak, but because the anticipation of what came after was always worth the temporary irritation.

“Is that what you think?” I asked, my voice dropping an octave. I could feel the heat rising in me, a slow burn that she had ignited with her words, her touch, her damn insolent eyes. “That I’m afraid?”

She leaned in closer, her breath warm against my neck. “I think you’re holding back. And I want to know why.” Her free hand snaked around my waist, her fingers digging lightly into the fabric of my shirt. “Don’t you want to stop holding back?”

The smell of garlic and tomatoes suddenly seemed very far away. All I could smell was her – a mix of her shampoo, something citrusy, and her own particular skin scent that I found utterly addicting. My grip on her wrist tightened further. “Maybe I just enjoy watching you squirm.”

“Oh, I’m not squirming,” she purred, her hips pressing subtly against mine. “I’m enjoying this. Aren’t you?”

“Don’t push it,” I warned, but my voice lacked its usual conviction. The truth was, I was enjoying it. The tension, the anticipation, the slow build-up of desire that she orchestrated so expertly. It was her way of foreplay, a verbal and emotional dance that always led to the same inevitable conclusion.

“Or what?” she challenged, her voice a whisper now, her lips almost brushing my ear. “Are you going to send me to my room? Ground me? Make me eat my vegetables?”

I let go of her wrist, only to grab her by the waist, pulling her flush against me. She let out a small gasp, but there was no surprise in it, only a hint of triumph. “Maybe I’ll just make you eat your words.”

Her eyes widened slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise in their depths. “Is that a threat, big guy?”

“Consider it a promise,” I murmured, my lips brushing against hers. Her breath hitched, and I could feel her heart thudding against my chest. She always played this game right up to the edge, but there was a moment, always a moment, when she realized she’d pushed just a little too far, when the control shifted, and she became the one being taken.

Her hands came up, resting on my shoulders. She looked up at me, her eyes unblinking, still holding that spark of defiance. “I’m waiting.”

That was it. The final straw. The casual insolence, the unwavering challenge. I lowered my head, and kissed her. It wasn’t a gentle kiss, or a tender one. It was possessive, demanding, a statement. Her lips were soft, yielding under the pressure, but I could feel the initial resistance in her body, a tiny tremor before she melted into me.

She tasted like grapes and berry gloss, and something else – a deep, almost raw sweetness that always caught me off guard. My hands slid down her back, pulling her even closer until there was no space left between us. Her fingers tangled in my hair, pulling slightly, a familiar sign that she was finally giving in.

When I broke the kiss, we were both breathless. Her lips were swollen, glistening, and her cheeks were flushed a deep rose. Her eyes were half-closed, heavy-lidded, the defiance still there, but softened, muted by desire.

“See?” she breathed, her voice still a little shaky. “Not so hard, was it?”

I chuckled, a low sound that vibrated through my chest. “You’re lucky I’m a patient man.”

“No, you’re not,” she countered, a ghost of her usual smirk returning. “You just pretend to be. For my benefit.”

“And what if I stop pretending?” I asked, my thumbs tracing the curve of her hips. “What if I just decide that I’ve had enough of your lip?”

She shivered, a sharp tremor that ran through her entire body. “Then I suppose I’d have to find a new way to annoy you.”

“Oh, I’m sure you would,” I said, leaning in to nuzzle her neck. Her skin was warm, soft, and smelled faintly of that citrusy shampoo. “But for now, I think I have a better idea.”

Her fingers gripped my shoulders. “Do tell.”

“How about we skip dinner?” I suggested, my voice hoarse. “And I show you exactly what happens when you push me too far.”

Her eyes, dark and heavy with desire, met mine. “Is that an order?”

“It’s a suggestion,” I corrected, “that you’d be very wise to follow.”

She bit her lip, a slow, deliberate movement that was designed to drive me absolutely wild. And it worked. Every single time. “And if I don’t?”

I tightened my grip on her, lifting her effortlessly into my arms. She let out a small squeal of surprise, wrapping her legs around my waist. “Then I suppose I’ll just have to make you.”

She laughed then, a bright, melodic sound that filled the kitchen. “My hero. Always so forceful.”

“You like it,” I stated, carrying her towards the bedroom. the smell of cooking pasta was quickly fading, replaced by something far more potent, far more compelling.

“I like that you finally stopped pretending you don’t,” she whispered, burying her face in my neck. Her hands were now tangled in my hair, pulling, urging me on. “I like that you finally took charge.”

I kicked the bedroom door shut behind us. The room was dim, the curtains drawn, casting a soft, muted light. I lowered her onto the bed, her body sinking into the mattress with a sigh. She lay there, looking up at me, her eyes still sparkling with that defiant challenge, but now mixed with something else – an eager anticipation.

“You’re still talking,” I observed, leaning over her. Her lips, still swollen from our kiss, parted slightly, inviting me in. “I thought we established that you’d had enough of that for one night.”

“Just making sure you heard me,” she said, her voice a little breathy. She reached up, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw again, this time with a possessive touch. “Making sure you know what I want.”

“Oh, I know what you want,” I said, my voice low and rough. “You want me to prove it. You want me to show you that I’m not always so reasonable.”

“And are you?” she asked, her eyes searching mine. “Are you going to show me?”

“More than just show you,” I promised, leaning down to kiss her again. This time, it was slower, deeper, a lingering taste of what was to come. Her hands were in my hair, pulling me closer, her body arching into mine. The playful defiance was gone, replaced by a raw, unadulterated need.

I trailed kisses down her neck, feeling the frantic pulse beating there. She arched her back, giving me better access. Her soft moans filled the quiet room, a sweet symphony of surrender. I moved lower, my lips finding the delicate curve of her collarbone, then the soft skin of her shoulder. She shivered, her fingers digging into my back, urging me to continue.

“You’re a pain in my ass, you know that?” I murmured against her skin, my words muffled by her hair. It was a truth, spoken with affection, and she knew it.

“Only because you let me be,” she whispered back, her voice thick with desire. “And you love it.”

“I do,” I admitted, pulling back to look at her. Her eyes were closed, her lips slightly parted, her cheeks flushed. She was utterly beautiful in that moment, vulnerable and eager, a perfect blend of the fire and softness that made her who she was. “I love every frustrating, infuriating, wonderful moment of it.”

I leaned in again, taking her lips in a deep, hungry kiss. Her arms wrapped around my neck, pulling me down, deepening the kiss. Her legs, still wrapped around my waist, squeezed gently, urging me closer still. The world outside the bedroom, the half-cooked pasta, the color-coded bookshelf – it all faded away, leaving only the two of us, locked in our familiar, heady dance. A dance of playful defiance and passionate surrender, proof of the fact that sometimes, the most infuriating people are the ones we can’t live without.

Her fingers fumbled with the buttons of my shirt, her breath coming in short, sharp gasps. I helped her, my own hands working quickly, eager to shed the layers between us. When my shirt was off, she trailed her fingers over my chest, her touch light but insistent. “Finally,” she murmured, her eyes dark with hunger. “Took you long enough.”

“You were busy being a brat,” I reminded her, lowering myself to press my bare chest against hers. The contact was electric, a jolt of heat that spread through my entire body. Her skin was soft, warm, and yielded against mine. I could feel her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my own.

She laughed, a breathless sound that was half delight, half anticipation. “And you were busy pretending you weren’t enjoying it.” She ran her hands over my shoulders, down my arms, her touch possessive and teasing. “Such a good act, though. Almost had me convinced.”

“Never fully convinced, though, were you?” I countered, my voice thick with desire. I kissed her again, a slow, lingering exploration of her mouth, tasting the sweetness, the faint berry flavor. Her lips were soft, yielding, and she moaned softly into the kiss, her body arching into mine. Her hands found the hem of my jeans, tugging impatiently.

“You know me too well,” she admitted, her voice a whispered confession against my lips. “I always know when you’re about to break. It’s my favorite part.”

“Oh, is it?” I pulled back slightly, looking down at her. Her eyes were heavy-lidded, dark with desire, and her cheeks were flushed a deep red. She was utterly captivating, a living, breathing testament to the power of pure, unadulterated passion. “And what’s your second favorite part?”

She grinned, a flash of white teeth against her flushed skin. “When you finally stop talking and just… take what you want.”

“Consider it taken,” I whispered, my lips finding the soft skin of her neck again. Her body trembled under mine, a sharp shiver that spread through her. I felt her hands pulling at my jeans, urging me on. The anticipation was a tangible thing in the room, thick and heavy, almost suffocating in its intensity. But it was a good suffocation, a welcome one.

We moved together then, a tangle of limbs and hungry mouths, lost in the rhythm of our desire. The playful defiance, the teasing words, the endless pushing of boundaries – it all culminated in this moment, this raw, uninhibited release. She was no longer the brat, no longer the provocateur. She was simply mine, yielding and eager, giving herself over to the passion she had so carefully, so deliberately ignited.

Her moans grew louder, more frantic, a sweet melody that spurred me on. Her fingers dug into my back, leaving faint red marks on my skin. I could feel her body tensing, arching, reaching for something just out of reach. And I was there, right with her, guiding her, pushing her, until she finally found it. Her body convulsed under mine, a series of exquisite tremors that left her breathless and weak.

I held her close, feeling the last shudders ripple through her. Her breath was coming in ragged gasps, and her heart was still pounding against my chest. She buried her face in my neck, her grip on me still tight, as if afraid I would disappear. I kissed the top of her head, my lips brushing against the soft strands of her hair. The room was quiet again, save for our ragged breathing, and the distant hum of the city outside.

After a few moments, she stirred, lifting her head to look at me. Her eyes were still heavy-lidded, but a faint, satisfied smile played on her lips. “Well,” she said, her voice a little hoarse, “that was… effective.”

I chuckled, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. “I told you I wasn’t always so reasonable.”

“You certainly proved your point,” she conceded, leaning in to nuzzle my neck. “Though I might have to test that theory again, just to be sure.”

“Oh, I have no doubt you will,” I said, pulling her closer. “And I’ll be ready for it. Always.”

She looked up at me, her eyes sparkling with that familiar challenge, but now softened by a deep affection. “You know,” she said, her voice a low purr, “you’re not so bad when you’re not trying to be the sensible one.”

“And you’re not so bad when you’re not trying to drive me insane,” I countered, pressing a soft kiss to her lips. “Though I do admit, it makes things interesting.”

“That’s the whole point,” she said, her smile widening. “Life’s too short for boring.” She snuggled closer, resting her head on my chest. “So, about that dinner…”

I laughed, a warm, contented sound. “I think we’ve earned ourselves a takeout night, don’t you?”

“Definitely,” she murmured, already halfway to sleep. “And maybe tomorrow, you can try being a little less… understanding. I miss the challenge.”

I shook my head, a slow smile spreading across my face. Some things, I knew, would never change. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. The brat in her was a part of her, an essential ingredient in the heady recipe of our life together. And I, for one, was always eager for another taste.
